This year’s NFL Draft already has some intriguing takeaways from the first round. For example, the Las Vegas Raiders drafted Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall in this year’s NFL draft. Mendoza was the widely projected first overall pick, as he led the Hoosiers to a program-changing national championship and won a Heisman Trophy. Mendoza is very talented, but can he change the Raiders as he did for the Hoosiers?
Another takeaway this year is the success of Coach Ryan Day and his Ohio State Buckeyes. Four Ohio State players were drafted in the first round, and three were in the Top Ten. Ohio State’s coaching staff can clearly develop recruits to the NFL, but will this trend continue?
The Los Angeles Rams interestingly drafted Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson thirteenth overall. The Rams have an MVP quarterback in Matthew Stafford, but he’s currently 38 and will likely move on from the Rams. Additionally, the Rams had bigger needs, ones that could fix their problems and push them to a Super Bowl. Coach Sean McVay is clearly looking for Stafford to mentor Simpson as the future quarterback for the Rams. But, are the Rams making a mistake drafting Simpson? Should they have drafted a bigger need for the team?
