On Mar 23, 2026, Trader Joe’s released large lavender and pink colored canvas tote bags. While this very well could have been no big deal, like any other tote bag on the market, the internet took this release and turned it into something big.
A sudden rush of excitement came with these tote bags, turning a regular Trader Joe’s experience into what felt like black Friday before the deals went downhill. People were lining up in the store fronts hours before opening for a $3.99 plain canvas tote bag that’s not lined and has no extra or unique features.
Trends like this aren’t shocking to most people on social media, but typically things go viral for some kind of a surprise element or special effect. This tote bag, for some reason, broke the standard by making people go completely crazy for simple bags with pretty colors.
This craze went so far, in fact, that Trader Joe’s had to put a limit on how many tote bags could be bought per person, and yet most stores still sold out within a half hour of opening. People were, of course, finding ways around the limit by coming back dressed as different people or going to different store locations. In a commentary video by Social Symone, she explains this behavior as immature. “I would expect this type of behavior from a child. 18 and below. I might even go up to 20,” she said.
On Ebay, the bags are being sold for much more than their original selling price. Some listings have been seen going for hundreds of dollars. In a live news interview, one man made a statement about why the bags were selling out worldwide, but especially in places that don’t have Trader Joes’ locations. “People in Europe, people in London, and people in Japan cannot get ahold of these, and this has become of the American standards, kind of like Levi’s and Coca-Cola,” said the shopper.
This bag is a perfect example of how trends are so unpredictable, and it may very well show how quickly trends can die.
