On Mar 20, 2026 Project Hail Mary featuring Ryan Gosling was released in movie theaters. Based on the book “Project Hail Mary” by Andy Wier, it was picked up by Amazon MGM Studios to be made into a movie. On opening weekend “Project Hail Mary” made $80.6 million domestically and over $141 million globally, making this the biggest debut for an Amazon MGM Studios film and second biggest opening for a non-franchise film in the last 10 years.
The movie is based on the “Project Hail Mary” mission, where school teacher turned scientist Ryland Grace goes up to space to help save the earth. In this timeline, the sun has Astrophage that is eating its surface. Grace is pitched the idea to go up into space to figure out a way to stop it from eating all of the sun, but the catch is that he won’t have enough power to come back to earth. While in space, he has to figure out why Astrophase is eating the sun and figure out a plan to stop that from happening.
The movie came out at the perfect time because soon after its release, the real space mission Artemis ll was starting as well. With Artemis II taking off on April 1st, the audience is loving the space era that is taking place in the media right now. The 4 astronauts onboard the Artemis ll got a private screening of the movie before the launch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen said that it was “a real treat.” The crew onboard Artemis ll even said “Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!” which is a line from the movie.
With all of the popularity from the movie, the book has now hit number 1 on New York Times paperback trade fiction bestseller list. This movie was also number 1 at the box office for two weeks in a row.
