Following the 2026 Winter Olympics, the United States men’s hockey team has been facing extreme controversy following their first place win. This past week, the gold medalists have been under fire for a leaked phone call between the team and President Donald Trump.
In the phone call, Trump was heard congratulating the team and inviting them to visit the White House. After praising the athletes, Trump made a comment about having to invite the women’s team in order to avoid impeachment. Following this remark, the entire men’s hockey team was seen hysterically laughing at their female counterparts’ expense.
A video capturing the entire exchange has been circulating across social media, and the reception has been less than positive. Hockey fans across platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Tiktok have openly expressed their disappointment towards the attitudes of players they have previously looked up to. Players Jack and Quinn Hughes especially have been facing backlash regarding their actions in the video, seeing as their mother, Ellen Hughes, is a coach for the women’s hockey team.
In response, the women’s hockey team opted to pass on Trump’s backhanded invitation. Instead, the team decided to indulge in a separate celebration. The gold medalists were recently spotted, accompanied by actor Stanley Tucci, at a sophisticated restaurant in Milan. The men’s hockey team, on the other hand, were photographed at the White House being treated to an incredibly presidential meal of cold fast food and bottled water.
While tensions between the teams are certainly there, the 2026 Winter Olympics marked the first time that US men’s and women’s hockey both scored a gold medal simultaneously. At the end of the day, both teams athletically represented America triumphantly, no matter what may have occurred off the ice.
