Since 1790, the President of the United States annually holds a joint address to Congress around the status of the nation. President Donald Trump held his State of the Union speech in the House Chamber in the U.S. Capitol on Feb.24. Before the speech, there was quite a stir around the latest Supreme Court ruling on Trump’s mass tariffs, effectively getting rid of most tariffs levied on imported products. Another concern going into the address is the current crisis with Iran; the U.S. has stalled in negotiations with Iran concerning nuclear weapons development.
During the address, Trump spoke about the state of the United States economy, praising the current economy compared to the previous economy run by former President Joe Biden. “Gasoline, which reached a peak of over $6 a gallon in some states under my predecessor and was, quite honestly, a disaster, is now below $2.30 a gallon in most states, and in some places $1.99 a gallon,” Trump said.
Trump also addressed foreign policy concerns by arguing for “peace through strength” in the wake of the crisis with Iran and the earlier deposition of Nicolas Maduro in January. “But one thing is certain, I will never allow the world’s No. 1 sponsor of terror, which they are by far, to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said.
Trump invited many guests to the State of the Union address, including Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk, and the United States Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey Team, after the team defeated Canada in the gold medal match two days earlier at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan.
Trump concluded the address by celebrating America 250, a celebration of the semiquincentennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. “The revolution that began in 1776 has not ended. It still continues because the flame of liberty and independence still burns in the heart of every American patriot, and our future will be bigger, better, brighter, bolder, and more glorious than ever before,” Trump said.
