With midterm elections coming up on Nov 3, 2026, a lot of American citizens are questioning if Trump will actually cancel midterms.
November midterm elections happen every 2 years during the current presidential term. Midterm elections are about voting people into Congress. Congress is made up of 435 members of the House of Representatives and 100 Senators. House of Representatives seats are up for election every 2 years while Senators can serve six year terms. For states like Texas and California during midterms voters can elect governors and state officials.
It’s very important for citizens to show up and vote during midterm elections. This can show how the voter actually feels about the sitting president. Typically whichever party the president is, and if the citizens are unhappy, the party switches in the House of Representatives. For example, in 2010 when Barack Obama was president the Republican party took control of the House, and in 2018 when Donald Trump was the President during his first term, the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives.
What President Trump means when he says he wants to cancel the midterms, is that he really wants the Federal government to be in charge of the voting instead of the individual states, as it usually is. Midterm votes are counted by local and state officials, so having the Federal government in charge of the process would be a big change.
Voting is an essential aspect of American government. It shows how the American people can use their voice to put someone they believe will be successful in power. Voting in local elections like midterms is important because the entire House and one third of the Senate is going to control Congress for the next two years.
