In November 2025, Caden Zeltner (12) won Best of Show at the State Fair baking competition by entering his flourless chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sauce. Zeltner’s winning recipe is a big deal for many because he is the first high school student in district and State Fair history to win.
“I was surprised when they had said I won, because I honestly didn’t think I would win,” said Zeltner.
This win was even more special to Caden because of where he got his recipe.
“My recipe used to be my grandma’s, but I had adapted it and made some changes, it took about 3 weeks,” said Zeltner.
Zeltner has loved baking since he was little, and he thanks his family and the school’s culinary program for helping him continue to learn and be successful.
“My biggest supporters were my friends and my mom…Having my chef help me was a big influence on me,” said Zeltner.
Despite his success in baking, Zeltner is choosing to pursue a different career.
“I wished to pursue baking as a career, but ultimately chose to become a firefighter instead,” said Zeltner.
When asked what advice he had to give to future competitors, Zeltner said, “It’s not always those complex desserts that wow the judges, if you win, you win on the first bite, so think of something simple yet extraordinary.”
Zeltner’s win is a great reminder to spend time doing things you enjoy, and to always work hard to reach goals that may seem impossible.
