At dinners, football games, friend outings, etc, bright flashes are popping up once again. Over the past few years, digital cameras have made an unexpected comeback, rising in popularity among teens who crave more authentic ways to capture memories.
Despite the convenience of smartphones, people have been using early-2000s-style cameras to create unique aesthetic and nostalgic photos. As a result, what was once seen as outdated technology has become a part of every teen’s must-have list.
Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have played a huge role in boosting the digital camera revival. On many platforms, the sight of soft-focus, vintage-looking photos is frequent. As a result, many teenagers have been inspired to participate in this trend. Brands have taken notice, too; some companies are relaunching older camera models or releasing new designs to mimic early-2000s styles. Digital cameras have become a staple at school events, concerts, and hangouts.
“They [digital cameras] make the photos seem more in the moment and nostalgic for me,” said Angela Kanyi (11). “The quality isn’t overly crisp like new phones, but it just has a ‘take me back’ vibe to them.”
This feeling of nostalgia is exactly what draws many teens to digital cameras. The quality of the photos being slightly inspected makes the photo feel more like real memories than polished images. For many students, that “take me back” aesthetic makes the photo feel more meaningful, truly capturing the moment.
“You’re able to share [the photos] with your friends and keep them as forever memories.” Namia Ahmed (11)
For many students, the biggest appeal is that the memories feel more personal. Instead of getting lost in a camera roll full of screenshots and random photos, the pictures taken on a digital camera become special moments worth saving.
