New York City held its mayoral election on Tuesday, November 5, 2025. Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani held a lead over his two rival candidates, Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, for most of the campaign trail. Most polls had Mamdani having a 10-15 point lead over Cuomo and Sliwa.
The three campaigns engaged in numerous disputes with one another; Mamdani criticized Cuomo for being part of the political establishment, Cuomo countered that Mamdani was too unrealistic and a democratic socialist, and Sliwa attacked both Cuomo and Mamdani, arguing that they were more of the same.
Cuomo and Sliwa’s efforts were not enough to defeat Mamdani in the general election though. Mamdani won 50% of the vote, whilst Cuomo and Sliwa won 42% and 7% respectively. Mamdani won every borough except Staten Island, which went for Cuomo. Mamdani won in the majority of minority population residential neighborhoods. Mamdani became the first Muslim and Millennial Mayor of New York City.
When the projections came, Mamdani’s watch party erupted in cheers; Cuomo and Sliwa’s parties had the opposite. Some of the highlights of Mamdani’s victory speech include a promise to make New York City affordable for New Yorkers, noting the end of the Cuomo family dynasty in New York. Both Cuomo and Sliwa congratulated Mamdani for his victory and wished him well in his job as Mayor of New York. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams also wished Mamdani well and stated his team will prepare for the transition after the election.
