The week following fall break, Pirates are scheduled to take their PSATs, an exam in preparation for the SATs later in the school year. These scores are incredibly important for students looking to apply to college, therefore rigorous preparation for the exam has already begun.
“Over the summer, I studied basically every day for the PSAT. I really want to get into a good college and have a good career, and you need to score well on the actual SAT to do that. So, I’m trying to do as good as I can on the PSAT to start,” Sofia Kirtou (11) said.
Due to the exam’s extreme importance, there are many strategies put in place for students to prepare. Throughout the course of the school year, students can attend study sessions, use online practice tests, and meet with teachers for additional help. For example, Wylie High has organized SAT prep classes that focus on specific skills that will be tested on the exam.
These sessions were specifically created for students to review material from the exam, practice answering questions similarly formatted to the SAT, and receive guidance on areas they are struggling in. Additionally, resources like online textbooks and SAT prep on sites like Khan Academy and Bluebook are available for students to independently study the skills they need.
“I bought two textbooks over the summer and basically studied whenever I got the chance. I tried to be really studious and study as much as I could,” Kirtou said.
The next PSAT Boot Camp, available to all high school students in the district, will be held on October 11 from 8am to 12pm in the Wylie East Library.
