For over the past decade, Wylie ISD has been under the leadership of Dr. Vinson, a superintendent infamous for giving a dollar to the first student he saw to do a Texas Tech guns up sign with their hands and for always being down to have a good time. As of September, 2025, Dr. Vinson handed the superintendent torch to Dr. Spicer as he looks forward to a new chapter in his life working for a different school district.
In Dr. Vinson’s absence, there’s going to be lots of things about him that will be missed, from his generosity when giving a kid a dollar to him playing chess with the principal.
“I’ll miss just playing chess,” Mr. Alexander said. “And he was always very positive, very encouraging.”
Students are curious to see what, if anything, will be noticeably different under the new leadership of Dr. Spicer.
“This is one thing I’ve heard people wondering about is if Wylie Way Days would change,” Lakyn Day (11) said. “I personally really enjoy Wylie Way Days and I think it’s really good for building community in your classes and stuff. So I hope that that doesn’t change now that Dr. Vinson is gone.“
While students are hopeful that traditions like Wylie Way Days will continue, staff share a similar confidence that the district’s strengths will continue to grow under Dr. Spicer’s leadership.
“I don’t think we’ll see a big difference in performing, we’re still gonna have our extracurriculars looking great, she’s an extracurricular person herself, she makes sure every kid has their spot,“ Mr. Alexander said. “She’s a former high school principal so she understands all the aspects of being a kid, so I think we’re not gonna see a big dropoff, and we’ll continue on the same path we’re on.”
With Dr. Vinson’s departure, students and staff are looking ahead with anticipation to see what the district might be like under the leadership of Dr. Spicer.
“I’m optimistic that people are going to enjoy her leadership just like they did Dr. Vinson in a different way because they’re both two different people,” Mr. Alexander said. “But I think people will enjoy having her as superintendent.”
