The Wylie High theatre department has begun production on their fall play, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.
“The show is about a rabbit named Edward who only cares about himself, but then he gets separated from his owner and has to learn the challenges of life, love, grief, and he goes through many different owners and becomes a kind rabbit at the end,” Kaylee Meyer (11) said.
Throughout the course of the production, actors and technicians are given a glimpse of a professional theatre setting, even giving certain students the opportunity to assist with directing.
“I’m the assistant director of the show, on a typical day at rehearsal I’m usually doing assignments and jobs for the director. I also stand on the side and watch the actors do what they do, taking notes for the director,” Gwyneth Poblete (11) said.
The show is currently in early stages of production, with actors just beginning to work out how to develop the show from script to stage.
“Right now, we’ve started blocking, warming up our voices and bodies to get ready, and then Mrs. Harrison would show us the blocking and we’d write it down and do it over and over again,” Meyer said.
Even though the rehearsal process has only just begun, cast and crew members have many goals they want to accomplish throughout the production of the play.
“One thing I’d like to learn from the show is how to be a responsible castmate, because I haven’t had a big role before,” Meyer said.
Overall, students involved in the play already have learned many life lessons from Wylie Theatre, and believe they will learn even more during this show.
“I think I’ve learned a sense of community and how to be more inclusive towards people. Especially since we’re such a big community, I’ve learned how to get along with everyone and realized everyone is really essential,” Poblete said.
