Students involved in band have gone through a lot of change to start the school year off. With the announcement of a new head director, Mr. Heuer, the dynamic and relationships within That Wylie Band have changed. New opportunities have arisen with a fresh perspective, and students have ideas of how the year will go with such a big change.
Mr. Dixon, the previous band director, left a big legacy with everything he accomplished with That Wylie Band before he retired. He is missed by many students who got to know him, so it’s been hard for some to be open to the idea of a new director. “I didn’t have an open mind about it,” band president Miles Adams said.
“However, as this year has progressed already, I’ve learned to absolutely love Mr. Heuer. He’s been great with everything. He’s improved the band so much, and my perspective on him and a new director change is definitely polar opposite now,” said Adams.
There’s a lot of new things that Mr. Heuer has brought to That Wylie Band as its new director, from changing logistics like the rehearsal schedule, to standard things like the way students learn music.
“I believe that the band will grow tremendously as our woodwinds get stronger in their playing and our brass gets more mellow in their playing,” said Dylan Ostrom. “So everyone’s balancing out. And with Heuer, there’s new ideas and thoughts. It’s going to
make our band even better in coming years.”
“Leadership kids have probably had one of the hardest times, because we got used to Dixon’s way of teaching and leading us, but we were able to adjust, and we enjoy having Heuer now as a director,” said Ostrum.
While change can be new and uncomfortable at times, TWB creates a culture of flexibility and positivity, with their number one rule being “No complaining!”
