On April 30th, Wylie Tennis competed in the District Championships with nine students advancing to the regional championships and earning eight out of the fifteen medals. They ended the championship with three 1st place finishes in Boys Doubles, Girls Singles, Mixed Doubles, two second place finishes in Mixed Doubles and Girl Doubles, and 3 third place finishes in Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles, and Girls Singles.
“I can say, if we were able to get like almost half of our teamout and the second best was by East, and they got like four out of their sixteen, so this year the way we were able to dominate, I was really happy with that,” Siddarth Manoj (12) said.
After dominating their fall season, in which they compete for team titles, they moved into their spring season where they compete for individual titles.
“It’s good practice whenever you have, like, the support of your team behind you,” Anvitha Kommera (11) said, “Whenever you play in spring, you don’t always have that luxury so just building confidence alongside your team helps you maintain that same confidence later on again in the spring.”
For Kommera this spring season was another step toward reaching her goals in tennis as she placed first in mixed doubles at district alongside Kushal Sheth (11).
“The past two years, I’ve gotten really close,” Kommera said, “I placed second so being able to do better this year and get first was a big milestone.”
The spring season also offers the ability for players to branch out and play in different events.
“Me and my doubles partners are both mostly single players as far as like…this is the first time we’ve gotten into doubles like this,” Manoj said.
Spring season play goes all the way to the state level and players are hoping to make it there.
“We’ve never had [anyone] in school go to state, like winning region before, so I’m looking to do that this year,” Manoj said.
The Wylie Tennis program continues to have successes throughout the entire school year, from team wins at district to individual wins.
