The Wylie Show and Sale is an annual auction where the students present their projects they have worked and built over the entire course of the school year. A majority of students show animals: lamb, goat, cattle, chickens, and swine while some show horticulture: flower arrangements.
The purpose of the Show and Sale is to present the work each student has put into the class throughout the year.
“It’s like people’s projects but for me, like my pig, I worked on him all year.” Aydia Brock (12) said, “It’s kinda the last end of the year show to show off all you’ve done all year. Everybody does it, it’s a ton of fun and the sale you walk through an auction and people will just auction off your animal or your project and you honestly make a lot of money off it.”
This is a chance for the students to show all their hard work throughout the year and reap the rewards from it.
“I made 2,800 dollars last year and I profited like a 1,000 so it was worth it and a lot of fun,” Brock said.
While a majority of them show animals or their horticulture, the officers have a different job to make sure everything is neat and in order for the Show and Sale to be a success.
“Well my job is the secretary so I just like to keep track of everything and make sure we plan meetings, everyone is involved and doing what they are supposed to be doing, and involving other people like if someone isn’t involved makes sure to involve them more,” Addie Seale (12) said.
This show is very special to the seniors as it is a last for them after spending all year bonding with these animals.
“Realizing that I’m a senior like it hitting me, I’m soaking in every last moment, making the most of it and having to set an example for the freshman and the younger kids and kinda leave the legacy of how you should go about it,” Brock said.
This show helps the students to give meaning to the late hours and time spent taking care of these animals and the bond they have created.
“I’ve worked on him all year,” Brock said. “At the beginning of the year whenever he was young, they call it breaking the animal, you just train them how to walk and like respond to the whips and stuff. I’ve washed him, cleaned his shavings to keep him healthy which is definitely hard in the winter and I’d say mainly just washing and walking cause you have to make sure their skin is moisturized.”
It also can give fun opportunities and experiences that they may not have been able to have without it. Seale was able to show a lamb which she has never done before.
“I did it to help a friend and we both thought it would be funny.” Seale said, “It’s like senior year so why not. In the ring, I was struggling a little bit but it was good. I did good for the first time showing a lamb.”
The Wylie Show and Sale is a great opportunity for students to present their hard work to others and happily close the year showcasing their talents in this class.
