As one of the most watched sports events in the world, Super Bowl 59 took place on February 9th between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chiefs were looking to secure the first 3-peat in football history, but a large majority of the fans in the NFL wanted the Eagles to crush that dream.
The Chiefs won the coin toss and decided to defer to the second half, so the Eagles started with the ball in the first half. The Eagles started with an early lead over the Chiefs in the first quarter. Jalen Hurts scored the first touchdown of the game with a little help from the “Tush Push” to get the job done. The Eagles looked really strong in the first quarter, while the Chiefs barely gained any ground. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-0 Eagles.
The second quarter blew the game wide open with the Eagles having a 24-0 advantage over the Chiefs. Cooper DeJean intercepted Patrick Mahomes pass and ran that in for a touchdown. A.J Brown got another touchdown and Jake Elliot kicked the ball for a field goal to extend the Eagles lead to 24-0 at halftime. Philadelphia’s 24-point lead was one point away from breaking the Super Bowl halftime record that was held by Washington from Super Bowl 22. The score at the end of the second quarter, going into halftime was 24-0 Eagles.
Many people were looking forward to the halftime performance featuring Kendrick Lamar. He had guest appearances by SZA, Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams and his own producer Mustard. Lamar performed two songs with SZA called “luther” and “All the Stars”. He also performed two of his diss tracks about Drake, “euphoria” and the infamous “Not Like Us” There had been people questioning whether he would perform “Not Like Us” as it was part of an ongoing lawsuit filed by Drake. Other hits performed were “Squabble Up” and “Humble”. The record breaking halftime show surpassed 133.5 million viewers across broadcast television and streaming platforms. The record before this was held by Micheal Jackson with 133.4 million halftime viewers in 1993 during Super Bowl 25.
After halftime, the Eagles came back and extended their lead even more over the Chiefs. The Eagles broke open the third quarter with 34 points on Devonta Smith’s 46-yard touchdown. The Chiefs finally got on the board at the end of the quarter with a touchdown pass to Xavier Worthy. The score at the end of the third quarter was 34-6 Eagles.
The fourth quarter looked like it was going to be the lowest scoring quarter out of the whole game. The Eagles started with a pair of field goals to extend their lead to 40-6. The Chiefs then followed with a touchdown on a 75-yard drive, followed by a 24-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes to Xavier Worthy for a touchdown. Even with all the efforts from the Chiefs in the last quarter, there would be no catching up to the Eagles. The Eagles won the Super Bowl and clinched their second Super Bowl title in the history of the franchise. Final score at the end of the game was 44-22.
This was an exciting win for the Eagles, who had been the underdogs going into the game. There would be no history making 3-peat for the Chiefs, who played one of their worst games ever. With Super Bowl 59 in the history books, the teams in the NFL can start to look forward to next season and dream about who will be a part of Super Bowl 60.
