With 2024 coming to an end, we need to celebrate the amazing music this past year had to offer. The 67th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 2nd, and here are some of the great moments of the night.
There were a few first time Grammy winners this past Sunday. From the memorable brat summer era, Charli XCX won her first 3 Grammys for her iconic album Brat. She had 8 nominations but walked away with 3 awards for Best Dance/Electronic Album, Best Dance Pop Recording and Best Recording Package. Another amazing pop artist that ruled the summer is Sabrina Carpenter who won her first two Grammys for Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance. From opening for Olivia Rodrigo early in 2024 to having the biggest crowd in Lollapalooza history, Chappell Roan won her first Grammy for Best New Artist. Rapper Doechii won her first Grammy for Best Rap Album and became only the 3rd woman to accomplish that in Grammy history.
There were some thrilling performances at the Grammys this year. Billie Eilish opened with a performance of “Birds of a Feather” accompanied by her brother Finneas. Followed by Sabrina Carpenter performing her two big hits from the summer, “Espresso” and “Please Please Please” with a jazzy rendition added to both of them. Chappell Roan performed one of my favorite songs of the night when she sang “Pink Pony Club” with the artists in the crowd singing and dancing along with her. All of the artists nominated for Best New Artist performed during the show. The artists in that category were Benson Boone, Doechii, Teddy Swims, Shaboozey and Raye, along with Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan, all performed their most popular songs. Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga performed a rendition of California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas to honor Los Angeles after the tragic wildfires. After boycotting the Grammys in 2021, The Weekend made a surprising return to perform two new songs “Cry for Me” and “Timeless” from his new album. Charli XCX ended the night by performing “Von Dutch” and “Guess”.
Some of the most talked about moments of the night was when Beyonce won for Best Country Album and Album of the Year for her 8th album Cowboy Carter. Also making news this past year was the rap feud going on between rappers Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Lamar seemed to have won that feud by walking away with 5 Grammys for his hit “diss” song “Not Like Us”. He won in the categories of Best Music Video, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Song of the Year, and Best Rap Performance. Alisha Keys won the Dr Dre Global Impact Award for her advocacy, artistry and her cultural impact. She has advocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has also co-founded the Keep a Child Alive foundation that helps kids and families with HIV/AIDS. There was a beautiful tribute to the late Quincy Jones, with Cynthia Erivo singing “Fly me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, which Jones had produced. Stevie Wonder sang “We Are The World” which was also produced by Quincy Jones and written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. At the end of the tribute, Janelle Monae performed “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough” by Micheal Jackson, which was also produced by Jones.
Grammy host Trevor Noah did a great job keeping the audience laughing throughout the show. He also mentioned the California wildfires that took place a few weeks before the Grammys. All throughout the night, there was a QR code on the TV screen for people watching at home, who could scan and donate to a fundraiser benefiting victims of the wildfires. At the end of the night he announced that over 7 million dollars had been raised to help the people affected by the fires.
The Grammys are always exciting, and this year was no exception. The performances were electrifying and the fashion was on point. I’m looking forward to this next year in music to see who will be winning the awards at the 2026 Grammys.
