Hollywood officially kicked off award season with the Golden Globes, which took place on January 5th. This was their 82nd show and with it came some truly iconic moments.
The host this year was Nikki Glaser and she did an amazing job with all of her jokes and really entertained the audience. Her opening joke was “Welcome to the 82nd Golden Globes, Ozempics biggest night!” Another joke from the night was “I’m scared Ariana (Grande), hold my finger,” joking at the fact that the Wicked movie press tour was very emotional for Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ervio. After comedian Jo Koy hosted last year, Glaser definitely made the Golden Globes funny and entertaining to watch again.
One of the big moments of the night was when actress Demi Moore won her first ever award for her role in “The Substance.” During her acceptance speech, she said something that resonated with a lot of people, including me. She said ¨I had a woman say to me ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick’.” Another first time Golden Globes winner was Zoe Saldana for her role in “Emilia Perez.” She said to her fellow nominees, “I’m in awe of you. Your strength, your complexity, your undeniable talent.” Viola Davis won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes as well. She is also an EGOT winner and she won this award for all of her contributions to the entertainment industry over the years.
The film ¨Emila Perez¨ was nominated for 10 Golden Globes–the most of the night–and walked away with 4 wins. Jeremy Allen White won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy for ¨The Bear.¨ “Baby Reindeer,” the hit show on Netflix, won 2 Golden Globes, one being for Jessica Gunning as Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role.¨Shogun¨, another big hit television series, won in all of the 4 categories that they were nominated for. The hit Broadway musical movie “Wicked” won for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement in one of the newest categories at the Golden Globes. The movie grossed more than $680 million world wide, the most for a musical ever.
The 2025 Golden Globes was a night that celebrated talented actors, directors, writers and many other people that work behind the scenes. The show, which aired on CBS, had 10.1 million viewers, which was a 7% increase from the year before. The devastating wildfires in Los Angeles started 2 days after the Golden Globes and cast a shadow over the excitement of the festivities. People are still looking forward to all of the upcoming award shows, such as the Oscars, Grammys and Screen Actors Guild Awards, but their hearts are with everyone that has been affected by this disaster.
