We’ve officially entered the dreariest part of the year, where New Year’s resolutions fall apart before they’re even started, and bank account balances sit alarmingly low. For many, the first half of January is defined by the uncomfortable emptiness left in the aftermath of the holidays.
Going from being off of school or work and surrounded by family, to getting back into the cyclical nature of daily life can be an incredibly stark change. Couple that transition with common seasonal depression symptoms, and you’ve got a really melancholic start to the year.
There are some things that can help though. Increasing sunlight intake can help ward away feelings of seasonal depression, and staying active can help boost energy levels as well. It’s also increasingly important to get good rest during these winter months, as school work and stress begin to increase again.
Try to prioritize your personal needs, and remember to carve out time in your schedule to do things that you enjoy, like spending time with your friends or watching a show that comforts you.
Regardless, this time of year can be tough for many people, and January seems to be the cruelest month. If you’ve failed at your New Year’s resolutions, remember to be kind to yourself–growth doesn’t come without slip ups or mistakes. And of course, we’re already halfway through January, so the end is near.
