At Wylie High School, the corridors echo with the cadence of many stories to tell–all just strands in a larger vibrant mosaic of diversity. You’re able to hear different languages from Spanish to Vietnamese as you walk around campus, and even catch the smell of homemade samosas being shared around lunchtime.
For some students, diversity is woven into their daily lives. Avery Luciano, a junior and a present officer of the Society of World Languages, works closely with the club to help spread diversity and culture.
“We gather students who take Spanish or French, it’s very diverse because anyone could join (as well) so we have awareness with different languages,” Avery Luciano (11) said. “We work as a group together to raise money for scholarships for people who are interested.”
Beyond the students, teachers play a pivotal role in fostering an inclusive environment. Teachers at Wylie High are equally important in making this a reality. It is everything, from infusing global viewpoints into their lessons to urging their students to share cultural traditions, or simply allowing them a place where they can converse safely. Diversity thrives because often, discussions will involve multiple viewpoints so that no student is invisible.
Wylie High School’s Asian Association Club embraces Asia’s rich culture and history while creating a fun and engaging environment for its members. Through volunteer events and social gatherings, the club offers students opportunities to connect, celebrate diversity, and build lasting friendships.
“It’s amazing to see classmates from different backgrounds appreciating different cultures from all across Asia,” Ethan Ong (11) said.
The school also excels in its initiatives to honor diversity through events. Every year, the Multicultural Student Organization works to organize a Multicultural night/festival, a key event that turns the bus-loop into an international celebration. Stalls displaying food, traditional garments, and artifacts populate the area, as performances ranging from Bollywood dancing to mariachi music.
Diversity at Wylie High forms the backdrop against which students live their day at school: learning, interacting, and growing up. The coming together of people with different backgrounds and perspectives into one setting at school offers an atmosphere where differences are valued and connections thrive.
