On Nov. 18, select students got inducted into the National Honor Society, otherwise known as NHS. To qualify for membership, these students had to meet not only the school’s eligibility requirements, but also extended criteria set by the society.
There are five pillars that the students are expected to adhere to: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Many do so by excelling academically and displaying this achievement through a high GPA.
“NHS means furthered responsibility and concerns with my grades, but it also means an expansion of future opportunities and recognition for my present achievements” Jacqueline Guarriello (11) said.
In addition to meeting academic standards, students are also evaluated based on leadership qualities and personal integrity.
“It will help bring recognition towards servitude and bring opportunities for scholarships and future leadership positions,” Guarriello said. “As someone who has high aspirations for herself and what she can do, I value taking any opportunity or advantage that’ll help me with my goals.”
The commitment and dedication of active members goes beyond the induction ceremony, as they are required to attend meetings, contribute to service projects, and constantly uphold the values of the society. However, this provides an added stressor.
“The biggest added responsibility is probably the 2 hours of service work per term required,” Rebecca Ivener (12) said. “It sometimes does feel like a lot with schoolwork to set aside that time to volunteer, but it really does help in the long run.”
The extra service hours is one commitment that may provide extra opportunities to those seeking scholarships or simply college admission.
“Being inducted in NHS means being one step closer to my goals of a bright future. It will provide me opportunities to make connections and stand out more in my college search,” Rahil Pal (11) said.
For these students, joining the National Honors Society is more than a title of honor – it’s a platform that sets them up for future success. Although feelings about joining can differ, having the ambition to seek new opportunities will ultimately provide the motivation and drive to achieve growth in the 5 aspects the society is built upon.
