School is considered a stressful place by many students. Their stress is caused by academic deadlines, exams, having to maintain good study habits, extracurriculars, and trying to keep an entertaining social life along with a job. All of these factors can take a toll on students, but one thing that seems to help students relax is finding comforting places around the school.
“When I felt stressed last year I went to Coach Cano’s classroom, because he was like a therapist. I could just talk to him about anything, and his class was comforting,” Bella Anderson (12) said.
A recurring theme in these comforting rooms is the student feeling as if they can talk to their teacher about anything, which brings a form of relief and a stress reducing environment to the classroom.
Another recurring theme is the different activities available in teachers’ rooms. For example, Mrs. Lavastida’s classroom is home to two rabbits, Blizzard and Fred, who reside there all hours of the school day. Another example is the library, which has puzzles every week for students to complete along with sofas and phone and chromebook chargers.
“I sit in the black box usually during lunch if I don’t go off campus, Most of my friends are in theatre and the energy that is in that room is so much better than the cafeteria,” Delaney Schilpp (11) said.
The black box is considered to be a change of environment. The average Wylie High classroom has light gray walls, white lights, and sometimes upwards of two square windows, so when students go into the black box, the warm energy that fills that space changes the perspective of the room.
“I usually go off campus for lunch, but when I’m on campus I usually go to Ms. Powell’s room because she’s been my teacher since seventh grade,” Lincoln Perez (12) said.
At the end of the day, every student has a different place of comfort. Deciding yours might be a hard decision to make, but great teachers and nice rooms make that decision easier.
