When Wylie High School has an event, there’s a lot of planning that goes on behind the scenes. The Student Council plays a huge role in helping organize and plan these events.
Being involved in student council means you have a lot of responsibilities to take on. But when a student is elected President of the Student Council, they have even more responsibilities than the average member.
“I have a bunch [of responsibilities] like getting the meeting slides done and making sure all the information is on there,” the president of Student Council, Zion Tesfaye (12), said, “I’m also in charge of overseeing all the things that Student Council does, which is making meetings for our general membership and putting together what we need for them, and that also includes all the Hoco stuff as well.”
Homecoming is a big event to plan, with many different steps to make it perfect.
“The first thing we did after we chose the theme for homecoming week, was to make a poster for each day and then we went through the things we needed to buy. We had a different committee for decorations and food,” Bethal Tamire (10) said.
With it being the beginning of the school year, there are a lot of events that are happening. The Student Council is in charge of organizing all of these events.
“So far we have done Homecoming week, and the officers are the ones that chose the dress up days. We are also in charge of the dance, the decor and the take down. We also do a lot of volunteer work for Wylie ISD events,” Tesfaye said.
When there are big events, the Student Council has meetings to help with ideas to organize whatever they’re hosting.
“If we are planning to host an event, we will talk about when we will have meetings for that specific event, and how many people are needed if we need volunteers to work on it,” Tamire said.
The Student Council doesn’t just organize parties, they also do volunteer work and community service. Next time we have an event at school, take note of how hard the Student Council worked to plan that event and make it perfect.
