Superintendent Dr. Vinson recently met with the student advisory council for the 2024-2025 school year. It is a collective group of around 30 high school students and other district faculty that discuss and tackle district-wide issues, aiming to create positive change for the future of staff and students alike.
“Vinson asked us questions about AI and how that should be implemented in the classroom and what ways we should prevent that from being used in the classroom,” Rayne Bussing (12) said, “[We] also talked about fighting outbreaks and how we can better prevent those among the district.”
While selecting members for this group, the positive contribution and care towards others as shown by involvement, especially leadership roles, is taken into consideration.
“I’ve been a part of the [band] leadership team for three years, and, and currently serving as a drum major. I really like to consider myself very involved in the student body. You know, the topics that concern some of us, our admin and our principals and our superintendent, they matter to me as well,” Zig Dickey (12) said.
By bringing a diverse range of student perspectives to the table, the counsel attempts to create opportunities for select students to accurately reflect how their peers may feel.
“I think it’s really good to get the students’ opinions on things before they make final decisions, just to get it from a different perspective from the kids sitting at the desk first, then the adults teaching,” Bussing said.
Aiming to bridge the gap between students and district leaders, the student advisory council offers a platform for genuine input on critical issues. By fostering open conversations, the group ensures student opinions are heard and understood with consideration.
