For the last few years, the boys Wylie High School cross country team have made state consecutively. The Pirates are going to attempt to make state again and beat the records set last year. An average day practicing for the races aren’t easy but they do help maintain the end goal.
“We usually have a routine.” Landon Cooper (11) said, “Everyday’s usually an average of seven miles. On Mondays we got quality session days [explosiveness], Tuesdays and Thursdays are our easy run days where we do seven miles and weightroom after.”
Cross country is a sport that requires consistency and hard work.
To maintain such a sport requires motivation among peers and unique practices.
“Our coach wants us to work on pack running, whenever we run as a group we’re able to push each other and motivate ourselves” said Zachary Brumfield (11).
Practices like these overall drive energy into one another.
Understanding the fundamentals of cross country is one thing, but putting in work outside of school also has to come into play.
“We put in a lot of work out of school because we don’t even have to show up to some of the practices that are during the breaks or during the summer, but we’ll [still] run almost everyday.” Brumfield said, “We have practice every weekday and run on our own on saturdays.”
Our boys in varsity cross country are determined and prepared to make state for another year. Given their motives and mentality, practice and preparations on the daily are intense, disciplined, focused on building endurance, speed, and mental toughness to excel in races.
