Wylie High upperclassmen are allowed to go across for lunch, but the underclassmen aren’t. Some have different views on the matter while others may be indifferent about the situation.
“I don’t have too strong of an opinion because like when I was an underclassmen, I did want to go across, but as an upperclassmen, I kind of understand not wanting them to go across,” Mika Paul (11) said.
Meanwhile, some freshmens believe they should be able to go across for lunch.
“I do believe underclassmen should be allowed to go across because if we go to like just to Wingstop, to Kroger, we would be able to get food, and some people don’t like to eat school lunch,” Harmony Bortters (9) said.
Sometimes they need a change of scenery.
“The pros for underclassmen to go across are to get food, go see friends, and being able to take a break from a school environment,” Bortters said.
However, there can be negatives to allowing underclassmen to go across.
“A con could be just crowded areas,” Paul said. “For places like Kroger, there could be stealing or just taking up space and stuff.”
Some of the reasons for underclassmen not being allowed across is because of bad behaviors.
“I believe underclassmen are not allowed to go across because they can skip, and they can fight, steal, and show that they’re not being the Wylie Way,” Bortters said.
However, this doesn’t apply to all of the underclassmen.
“Most underclassmen are good, and you just have to keep an eye out for the people who make the bad choices,” Bortters said. “If you ever see someone stealing or being disrespectful, go and tell a principal or one of the admin to make sure that it doesn’t happen again.”
There could be exceptions to allow underclassmen to earn the privilege to go across.
“They should have good grades or something,” Paul said. “They don’t get in trouble like they don’t get dress-coded or no detentions.”
In the end, there are pros and cons to allowing freshmen and sophomores to go across. However, they should be able to prove themselves to earn the privilege of going across for lunch.
