On Nov 22, 2022, ChatGPT was released to the public with the ability to ask Artificial Intelligence any question. In response, it gave a lengthy summary after scouring the entire internet. The first thoughts from people were how helpful it could be for their education and school work, but it ended up becoming the topic of many conversations.
“ChatGPT can be a useful tool if used efficiently and correctly,” said Emily Illingworth, WHS English teacher.
ChatGPT, in recent months, has been seen as a resource for easy work instead of a helping guide. The AI has answers to all your questions that can appear with the click of one button. This helps significantly in English language art classes because, unlike all the other core courses, these focus on writing and the rules of grammar and punctuation, which ChatGPT knows how to construct and answer pretty quickly.
“While everyone I know, student or teacher, thinks of ChatGPT as a tool for cheating, I see it as a helpful resource,” said Aidan Clarke (11).
ChatGPT and similar AI can be used for the better, for example, as tools for inspiration and outlines when there is confusion about how to follow up with an assignment. On the non-educational side, AI could be used as an item to play around with or soothe boredom. With ChatGPT to be created as something with human-like responses, you could maintain a conversation with it as if it were an actual human you were conversing with in real life.
“I have seen a significant increase in the use of AI in the last year,” said Illingworth,” I personally have not had an issue with it in my class, but I know other teachers I work with have since the last year with the rise of ChatGPT.”
However, with this new advancement, a new question is raised. Will this end up helping the next generation of students or make things significantly harder on everyone, especially teachers?
