There is a popular word floating around the hallways of Wylie High called, “Senioritis.” If you are unaware of the word Google defines senioritis as “a supposed affliction of students in their final year of high school or college, characterized by a decline in motivation or performance”. Even though the 2023-2024 school year has just started our seniors are already coming down with cases of senioritis.
“[Senioritis] is very real, I struggle a lot with it,” Avery Finta (12) said. “I feel like I put less effort into my work compared to my freshman year.”
Senioritis is especially present in some students’ lives who already have confirmed plans after graduation.
“I do believe that being a senior does make someone more susceptible to burnout and lack of motivation,” Cora Davis (12) said. “I definitely do feel my motivation slipping, especially because I’ve already been admitted to college.”
For some others it is expected to arrive later in the year.
“Yes I have later in the year [felt burnout] last year I became more tired and sluggish,” Frederick “Deuce” Johnson (12) said. “No, [senioritis] hasn’t [affected me] but I’ll do my best to stay on track, but It most likely will.”
Despite lack of motivation to finish classwork, or even arrive at school, our students are expected to succeed, and have strategies to do so! Including looking to others for motivation.
“Personally, viewing my friends’ social media and witnessing them succeed in college keeps me inspired these days,” Davis said.
Or even keeping your mind set to graduate with outstanding grades.
“Develop a mindset that doesn’t allow many distractions from your goals and aspirations,” Johnson said.
While it may be difficult to keep your mind concentrated through this last school year, it is a good reminder to know that this could be your final year within a school environment… if you keep your grades and attendance up!
