People always talk about what they are doing during their season, but never talk about how they prepare during the offseason. The off season is the time where people push themselves and make themselves better, making it just as important as the actual season. However, this is different for each sport and athlete as they have different goals they are trying to accomplish.
“I’m not really ever on an off season,” Desiree Isom said. “Once school track is done I go straight into summer track.”
During the off season for track, they do form work and weight room as well as acceleration workouts, so they can improve their times during a meet.
While the off season is about training harder to get better, it is also an area for growth in relationships with your teammates. There is team building, laughing with friends, and your friends are pushing you. You feel like you are part of a family. That’s what happens during the off season: people grow and connect with each other. In addition, there are still good things about the season itself and what people are excited for. For track, they are excited for the competition and meets, and many are also very excited about the different relays that take place during the year.
“I am excited for the competition,” Isom said. “I am also excited to go to the Texas Relays again this year.”
Even with all the positive aspects, there is always a bad part to anything you do. For track, it is the hard workout days that tend to be a struggle.
“I’m not excited for the hard workout days. On those days I’m always out of breath,” Isom said. “And [I can’t] eat whatever I want on those days.”
Off season for track might look different than the other sports during off season, but it is still an important part of being an athlete. Off season not only makes you a better athlete and teammate, but a better person overall.
